Don’t Let the Tropics Ruin Your Firearms: Tips for Rust and Mould Prevention

When the wet season rolls in and the humidity starts to rise, especially across the tropics of northern Australia, it’s not just your camping gear that’s at risk. Rifles, shotguns, pistols and muzzleloaders—even high-end models—can fall victim to rust, corrosion, and mould if not checked and maintained properly.

It doesn’t take long for moisture to start working its way in. Your mounts, bipods, slings, and even leather gear can develop rust or mould. Wooden stocks are especially vulnerable, as they can start attracting mildew and warping if not properly aired or sealed. And let’s not forget the most important part—the inside of the barrel. That’s where damage often starts, unseen until it’s too late.

Prevention Tips to Keep Your Firearms in Top Shape:
Regularly inspect and clean your firearms, even if they haven’t been used recently.
Wipe down all external surfaces with a lightly oiled cloth after exposure to humidity or rain.
Don’t forget the internal bore—run a clean patch through it and ensure it's lightly oiled if being stored.
Open your gun safe for at least an hour each week to air it out. Closed spaces can trap humidity and accelerate rust.
A quick wipe-out with white vinegar can help reduce mould inside your safe (just be sure everything is dry before sealing it up again).
Invest in humidity-absorbing products such as those from Hornady or other firearm accessory manufacturers. Many of these can be reactivated by drying them out in an oven or microwave, according to the instructions.
Remember, even stainless steel firearms are not immune to corrosion in tropical conditions. And rust or mould damage is often not covered under warranty, so a little time spent maintaining your gear can save a lot of heartache down the road.
Whether you're a seasoned hunter, collector, or just a weekend shooter, keeping your firearms in top condition is part of the pride of ownership—and it starts with staying one step ahead of the elements.
